Your child reads aloud. They recognise the words. Yet when you ask, “What was that passage about?” the answer is brief or uncertain.
This can be worrying, especially when reading affects homework in English Language Arts, Science and other subjects. It also shows why reading support should begin with a closer look at the specific difficulty.
Reading involves more than saying the words
One learner may read slowly and lose track of the sentence. Another may read smoothly but find unfamiliar vocabulary difficult. A third may understand a story yet struggle to make an inference or explain an answer using evidence from the text.
Giving all three learners the same worksheet is unlikely to address their needs. First, we need to see how each child reads, understands and responds.
British Columbia says it is expanding early literacy screening through Grade 3 this school year. If a school raises a concern about your child’s reading, ask what the result means and which skills need support. A tutoring diagnostic can help plan extra practice, but it does not replace the school’s screening.
How Glareminds finds a useful starting point
In a short, age-appropriate reading diagnostic, a Glareminds tutor may ask your child to read a passage, talk about its meaning, answer a few questions and give a brief written response. We also consider the child’s grade and any school feedback you share.
The tutor looks for patterns such as:
- Difficulty reading words accurately or fluently
- Vocabulary that makes the passage hard to follow
- Trouble identifying the main idea or key details
- Difficulty making an inference
- Answers that need clearer explanations or text evidence
We then give the parent a concise report: what the learner did well, what appears to need work and what we recommend practising first. If lessons begin, weekly feedback can show which skills have been taught and how the child is responding.
Support that fits your child
One-to-one tutoring allows the tutor to pause, ask questions and adjust the lesson as the child reads. A learner who needs to strengthen fluency should not have the same plan as a learner who reads confidently but struggles with comprehension.
Glareminds supports families in Vancouver, Surrey, Burnaby and elsewhere in British Columbia through live online lessons. We can use your child’s grade, school topics and teacher feedback to make the support relevant to what they are learning.
If your child can read the words but cannot confidently explain what they mean, you do not have to guess at the cause.
